It starts with the Devil, one of the oldest storytellers, who introduces us to the main character, João Parvo (Silly John).
After another reprimand, João Parvo’s mother asks him to collect firewood; he is distracted again and finds a magic fish, who offers him his services in exchange for being saved from certain death. Not having done what his mother told him, João makes his 1st request to the fish and in the nick of time, he is back home riding a bundle of wood, something never seen before, looking more like a magic trick and causing general laughter, including the king and his daughter, who hadn’t laughed since she was born.
The king has to fulfil what he had once promised: ‘Whoever makes the princess laugh, that very day will become my son in law.’
But João still has to pass one more trial: bring the three golden hairs of the devil. Only then may he marry the princess. And so, João left...
He made his journey to the river that would take him to Hell. After a bumpy ride, João returns with the three golden hairs from the devil and even with a great wealth. But all this, with the help of the magic fish!
When he arrives at the palace, he is greeted with opened arms by the whole court and finally marries the princess!
